Discovering the Delights of the Tweed Valley

Escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney and embark on a serene journey to Kingscliff, nestled in the picturesque Tweed Valley. Join me on a delightful long weekend getaway with my husband and two couples, dear friends for the past 25 years. Our adventure, filled with laughter, exploration, and delicious meals, paints a vivid picture of the treasures awaiting you in this coastal haven.

Day 1: Relaxing Riverside

Our weekend began with a slight hiccup as our Thursday night flight was cancelled, but a super early Friday morning departure had us arriving at the Gold Coast bright and early.

After a quick 15-minute drive to Kingscliff, we indulged in a delectable breakfast at Cubby Bakehouse, a charming cafe by the river.

Energized and ready for adventure, we made our way to our friends' holiday house, located a stone's throw away from the tranquil Cudgen Creek. Our afternoon unfolded on the pristine waters of the creek as we paddle-boarded (and floated!) beneath the warm sun. A well needed refreshing swim capped off the day's activities.

After returning to our cozy abode for a quick shower, we ventured to local restaurant Taverna, a Greek gem that captivated our taste buds. The Byron Bay haloumi with bush honey and fresh rosemary, the Spanakopita, and the Slow Roasted lamb shoulder left us savoring every bite.

Day 2: Rainforest Waterholes and Artistic Heritage

Saturday dawned with an early surf and a decision to explore the lush Currumbin Valley. A stroll along the Cougal Cascades Track immersed us in the wonders of the rainforest. The day's heat led us to a refreshing dip in one of the waterholes, providing the perfect respite.

Our weekend culinary journey continued at Husk Gin & Rum Distillery, where we hungrily devoured a delicious ploughman's lunch whilst enjoying the relaxed outdoor vibes of their restaurant. A freshly made frozen ginger beer complemented the experience, and we couldn't resist taking home a bottle of the famous Ink Gin, known for its vibrant purple hue.

Our exploration then turned towards the cultural as we headed to the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah, housing the Margaret Olley Art Centre. The recreation of Olley's Paddington home, where she lived and painted, added a touch of history to our day.

Day 3: Beachfront Bliss and Nostalgic Detours

As Sunday greeted us with another beautiful blue sky day, we embarked on a leisurely beach walk, tracing the shoreline to the expansive resort development of Salt. The inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee beckoned us to a delightful café. Of course, another refreshing swim in the crystalline waters of the ocean added a touch of invigoration to our morning.

Returning home, we indulged in a hearty home cooked late breakfast, and shared stories and lots of laughter as we reminisced over many stories from our shared past.

As the afternoon sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, we reluctantly bid farewell to Kingscliff. However, our departure was not without a detour into the pages of our collective history. En route to the airport, we took a nostalgic journey through childhood holiday locations, stopping at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales and Rainbow Beach on the Gold Coast – both retaining the charm we remembered.

In the quiet hum of the car on the way to the airport, we reflected on the exquisite tapestry of the Tweed Valley area, with its pristine landscapes and vibrant cultural offerings and felt as though we had only scratched the surface of what the area has to offer. So pack your bags, escape the city, and immerse yourself in the tranquility and charm of Kingscliff – a true haven for a memorable long weekend getaway.
